28 Dec 2008 7:19 AM

MELBOURNE, Dec 28 AAP - An 18-year-old Melbourne woman died when a speedboat crashed into a tree on Lake Eildon early on Sunday.

The woman was a passenger in the boat, driven by a 16-year-old boy, when it crashed at about 1.30am (AEDT).

She was thrown into the water and disappeared. The boy alerted people on a nearby houseboat and they found the woman's body a short time later, police said.

The woman, from Ringwood North, was unrelated to the teenage driver.

Police are investigating her death and the cause of the crash, which happened near Nicholas Inlet on Lake Eildon, north-east of Melbourne.

They have not ruled out speed or alcohol as possible contributing factors.

The driver of the boat suffered minor injuries and was taken to Maroondah Hospital with a suspected broken arm.
